Fellowships and awards

    I was awarded an NDEA (National Defense Education Act) fellowship by the University.  This covered two years of college with a check coming once each quarter from Washington DC, compliments of a grant awarded to Dean Henry Eyring.  A second source of funding was needed to finish so I applied for an NSF (National Science Foundation) fellowship and failed.  I then applied for an NIH (National Institutes of Health) fellowship and received the requested award for one year.

Gail Pollock and I were nominated for membership in the Sigma Xi honorary society for our publication in “The American Journal of Botany”.  This was quite an honor at the University of Utah, as evidenced by our invitation to the annual honors banquet.  The new members of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Xi were treated as equals.  Gail, Kathryn, and I attended the banquet with great interest.  Of the couples at our table, the new members of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi were the wives.  Thus the honorees were women that were older than Gail or I. The husbands reported that they never won any grade honors.  In defense of my science grades I noted most of the grade awards were not in the science fields.
